I recently finished a marvelous book, Simon Mainwaring's WE FIRST. No I did not write ME FIRST. That is the point. It is no longer relevant to talk or do business in the first person. Hear that NBA players. Sorry the sidebar. In the new normal WE need to think collectively and collaboratively. A growing number of progressive people and progressive businesses figured that out a while back. Think Starbucks. Think Bill Gates and Warren Buffet. Think you and me, and the causes that we believe in. Think about how are core values and respective missions are in alignment with others.
The sub-title of WE FIRST is How Brands & Consumers Use Social Media to Build a Better World. I guess that is what you and I are doing now. We have embraced social media as a primary way of connecting and sharing our respective core values. Personal and organizational brands who do so have figured out that is the 21st century way of doing business. Those who have yet to have their aha moments are not reading this blog post, but hopefully they will pick up or order a copy of WE FIRST.
Mainwaring does a great job of helping the reader understand the value of cooperative business engagement and making best use of social media to recruit and retain brand champions. Here are a few stats that WE FIRST contains which can provide the reality check everyone needs to confirm we are living in a WE FIRST economy now. 1.4 billion people live on less than $1.25 per day. 8.1 million children died in 2009 before reaching the age of 5. Nearly 800 million people are illiterate. Over 550 milloin people are registered on Facebook. 90 Million on Twitter and 50 million on Linked-In. Got it?
