Yesterday a legion of champions paid homage outside of Comerica Park, home of the Detroit Tigers, to their favorite brand, Ernie Harwell. An open casket laid near the statue that honors one of the all time great radio voices of sport. Harwell passed earlier in the week at age 92. He will be missed by thousands around the globe.
I became a champion of the Harwell brand many years ago. At that time I was an admissions counselor for a local college and spent a good number of Sundays driving to a city in which I would be visiting high schools that week. I was often kept company with Harwell during three hour afternoon baseball games on my car radio. He helped make my long trips very enjoyable and I felt like he was sharing a story one-on-one with me.
He appeared to be such a kind man. I know thousands have had the same experience. He was always on-brand if you will. For all he contributed in a such a human way. Ernie Harwell is the Brand Champion of the Day.
