Phoenix Suns- Brand Champions for Cinco de Mayo. What About State of AZ?
Yesterday was Cinco de Mayo, May 5. A day to celebrate Latino heritage. During their playoff game last night the Phoenix Suns of the National Basketball Association wore team jerseys with Los Suns on printed on them. According to team owner, Robert Sarver, they did so "to honor our Latino community and the diversity of our league, the State of Arizona and our nation."
This demonstration displays what it means to be a brand champion. Especially in light of the controversial immigration decisions in Arizona. It would have been easy for the basketball team to stick with their traditional team jerseys and take the safe route. It is nice to see the team step out and make a bold statement. Brand champions do so.
It will be interesting to see how the State of Arizona responds to this and other strategies that are bound to take place in support of the Latino community.
